Wallingford Head is held over two divisions at 10.30am and 1.30pm, with different events in each division.
The race is over 4250m from Moulsford Railway Bridge to the OUBC boat house at Wallingford Marina.
Wallingford Head was originally an unofficial Christmas head race run at Wallingford Rowing Club. The 1994 race included novices who had been rowing for only a few months, scullers (recreational and serious), juniors and squad crews from Wallingford and Oxford Brookes.
Most of the training at that time of year was done in eights but despite many clubs training in them, there were no winter head races which included an eights category. There still are very few races for eights until March.
It was decided to add a date to the ARA calendar which would be run by Wallingford and primarily for eights. To cover all boat types it was also decided to add all sweep oar boats.
The first event in 1995 hosted a healthy and promising 97 crews. However, that race had to be cancelled on the day due to freezing fog which only lifted the following day. Despite a shaky start, lots of competitors stayed faithful and re-entered the event the following year and entry numbers have increased every year since then.
Despite floods and freezing weather the event has gone ahead most years, but entries have been restricted to ensure the safety of competitors. Rowers continue to brave the winter waters and the 2011 event went ahead in beautiful sunshine with a light breeze to help the crews on their way. Thanks to everyone who competed and also to all the volunteers.
The date for 2012 is Sunday 2 December.
